SERVPRO Orchestrates Outstanding Water Damage Restoration Options for Voorhees Homeowners

Every place has a list of residents, past and present, of note, and Voorhees is no exception. A star among the athletes, politicians, educators, and other musicians hailing from the township is violinist Sarah Chang. Although born in nearby Philadelphia on December 10, 1980, Chang was raised in New Jersey's Cherry Hill and Voorhees Township. Her parents are from South Korea, coming to the United States in 1979 to pursue further musical studies. Her father, Min-Soo Chang, sought an advanced music degree at Temple University. Her mother, Myoung-Jun Chang, took music composition classes at the University of Pennsylvania.

What Transpired During the Early Years of Sarah Chang's Life and Career?

Sarah Chang's father noted her precocity with the violin at a very early age, obtaining a 1/16 size instrument for her at age four. Public performances commenced at age five. Moving forward just a couple of years, Chang was awarded the Starling scholarship to the Juilliard School, studying along with her father with Dorothy DeLay and Hyo Kang. At age six, she started studying with Isaac Stern outside school. She auditioned for Zubin Mehta and Riccardo Muti when eight years old, resulting in her performance with the New York Philharmonic of Paganini's Violin Concerto No. 1 in 1988. Additional professional performances continued through her grade-school and into her teen years. She soloed in performances with major orchestras, associated with the works of:

  • Paganini
  • Tchaikovsky
  • Sibelius

Her first recording contract with EMI produced the 1991 album, Debut. Released to the public on August 18, 1992, it rapidly climbed Billboard's classical best-sellers chart. She was then eleven years old.

How Did Sarah Chang's Art Develop and Impact Her Daily Routine During Her Pre-Teen Years?

The Debut album release increased the recognition she received in the classical music world. Many conductors and orchestras sought her out, but she and her parents tried to achieve some balance. When interviewed by a reporter from the New York Times in September 1992, Chang's mother said, "We are trying not to do too many concerts, because she should go to school, and she should have her childhood, with friends, movies, swimming and parties." In the same interview, Chang herself reported, "I like many kinds of sports, including swimming, roller skating and water skiing, which I learned this summer." Sometimes her desire to just act like any other kid had sobering results. "After my concert in Chicago," she said, "I went swimming. We were running around the pool, and I slipped and sprained my left hand." That injury and its required cancellation of many performances. Lessons are sometimes learned the hard way.

How Does Chang Feel About Her Teenage Years in New Jersey?

During an interview with the online publication New Jersey Stage, Chang recalled her teen and high school years in New Jersey. She claims to consider herself a "Jersey Girl" and is proud to be a New Jersey high school graduate. As reported in "Simply Sarah!" Spotlight on Classical Music's Sarah Chang, she relates:

“I spent my teen years in New Jersey, so that means a lot to me. That's where I first started dating, that's where I first learned how to drive — my very first license was a Jersey license — and that stays with me always.”

What Waited After High School Graduation for Sarah Chang?

Of course, while Chang was living the life of a Jersey high-schooler, she was also attending Julliard and performing. By the time she graduated from high school, she was performing 100 yearly concerts and pursuing her musical studies. During the two-plus decades after her high school graduation, Sarah Chang continues to perform and record, thrilling audiences with her technique, virtuosity, and profoundly emotional playing. Over the years, she received numerous awards:

  • 1991 -- awarded the Nan PA Award, Korea's highest prize for musical talent
  • 1992 -- was the youngest musician receiving the Avery Fisher Career Grant
  • 1993 -- was named Gramophone Magazine Young Artist of the Year
  • 1993 -- was named Newcomer of the Year for Echo in Germany ("Echo" Schallplattenpreis)
